It’s also something almost everyone Tolkien knew would have done… in driving horses. To be put in the place of the horses by goblins… perhaps imagery more present for people who have actually driven horses than for people who haven’t.
In that way, it’s borderline archaic, though probably Tolkien would not have intended it to be so.
