Know

Common word, commonly used.

Update one week later: I have resisted for a full week any reference to Sir Terry Pratchett’s magnificent created word “Knowlessman” (from Guards! Guards!). Apparently the word has wandered all over fandoms and tropes. Just magnificent. I was searching because I kind of hoped to find it was actually an obsolete word. Nope, Pratchett just had the knack of inventing words that rang with archaism. What I did find, however, was “knowness”, acknowledgement, a darned rare word with the flavor of “this bag of coin right here that I am handing you is my knowness, because I certainly wouldn’t be handing coin over to just anyone who claimed they were my lord.”

• 1.004 Now you know enough to go on with.
• 1.015 I don’t think I know your name?’
• 1.016 and I do know your name,
• 1.016 And you do know my name,
• 1.033 but he liked to know them before they arrived,
• 1.033 he knew his duty
• 1.058 Seems to know as much
• 1.091 well known to us all.
• 1.092 without telling any one there anything that was not known already.
• 1.103 And I know where Mirkwood is,
• 1.106 but how do we know that it is secret any longer?
• 1.106 to find out anything there is to know about those caves.’
• 1.111 we don’t know without going to see.
• 1.115 if I know anything about the roads East,’
• 1.119 First I should like to know
• 1.121 Also I should like to know about risks,
• 1.123 you know,
• 1.123 Indeed they hardly know a good bit of work from a bad,
• 1.123 What goes on there now I don’t know for certain,
• 1.124 in the proper time I should know.
• 1.125 which only they knew about.
• 1.125 and I should like to know how Gandalf got hold of it,
• 1.132 How he got there I don’t know,
• 1.140 And well, don’t you know,
• 2.038 “These parts are none too well known,
• 2.048 Bilbo knew it.
• 2.053 “Lumme, if I knows!
• 2.072 knew what was happening,
• 2.089 I’d like to know.”
• 2.106 for trolls, as you probably know,
• 2.115 we shall know more about them.”
• 2.126 So now you know.
• 3.006 as some of you may know.
• 3.009 who seemed to know his way about pretty well.
• 3.016 No knowing, no knowing
• 3.016 No knowing, no knowing
• 3.025 with these people that seemed to know his names
• 3.025 Elves know a lot
• 3.025 and know what is going on among the peoples of the land,
• 3.035 Elrond knew all about runes of every kind.
• 3.043 until goodness knows when.
• 3.047 said Thorin, “is as all should know
• 4.002 Bilbo knew there lay his own country of safe
• 4.003 and he knew how evil
• 4.003 and Gandalf was a wise enough wizard to know it.
• 4.004 He knew that something unexpected might happen,
• 4.004 You know how terrific a really big thunderstorm can be
• 4.007 “Well, if you know of anywhere better,
• 4.010 who knew that caves up
• 4.011 though everybody knew they could not have been long about it;
• 4.012 you don’t know how far they go back, sometimes,
• 4.014 goodness knows where to.
• 4.017 but the goblins knew their way,
• 4.030 in fact I should like to know all about you.
• 4.030 I know too much about your folk already;
• 4.031 not quite knowing what to say all at once
• 4.033 They knew the sword at once.
• 4.042 and no knowing quite where we are,
• 4.044 and these goblins knew the way better
• 5.002 but he did not know it.
• 5.004 Goodness knows what the striking of matches
• 5.009 All he knew was that it was still going down pretty steadily
• 5.009 as he knew by the glimmer of his sword,
• 5.009 I do not know how long he kept on like this,
• 5.010 He did not know whether it was just a pool
• 5.011 goodness only knows how many years ago,
• 5.012 I don’t know where he came from,
• 5.019 and I don’t know where I am;
• 5.019 and I don’t want to know,
• 5.031 and Gollum knew the answer as well as you do.
• 5.047 I imagine you know the answer,
• 5.056 and that he ought to know it,
• 5.077 He knew,
• 5.084 of which Bilbo knew nothing,
• 5.087 But who knows how Gollum came by that present,
• 5.098 As far as Bilbo knew,
• 5.114 We can’t know till we find the nassty creature
• 5.114 But it doesn’t know
• 5.114 It doesn’t know,
• 5.114 It doesn’t know the way out.
• 5.115 It knows.
• 5.115 It knows a way in,
• 5.115 it must know a way out, yes.
• 5.129 had he known it,
• 5.133 not knowing that even the big ones,
• 6.001 but he did not know where he was.
• 6.008 The dwarves wanted to know
• 6.012 as you know quite well,
• 6.015 Oh, just crept along, you know –
• 6.019 Then they wanted to know all about his adventures
• 6.020 He thought I really knew the way out,
• 6.025 He wanted to know how the wizard had turned up again,
• 6.030 The rest we all know –
• 6.030 except that Gandalf knew all about the back-door,
• 6.030 As a matter of fact it was well known to anybody
• 6.050 but he knew that noise.
• 6.069 to know what was afoot;
• 6.088 Now I know what a piece of bacon feels like
• 6.089 because the bacon knows
• 6.094 and the eagle-lord appeared to know one another slightly,
• 7.008 answered Gandalf, who knew the correct reply.
• 7.012 and you don’t know where you are.
• 7.012 But there is somebody that I know of,
• 7.016 and he knows it well.’
• 7.017 Who knows it?’
• 7.018 or heaven knows what will happen.
• 7.020 If you must know more,
• 7.040 Well, now I know who you are,
• 7.082 in the old days he had known the very part of the mountains
• 7.085 and they know it.’
• 7.095 for they knew
• 7.118 Bilbo thought he knew what the wizard meant.
• 7.123 you would take the word of no one that you did not know
• 7.126 I know,
• 7.141 Then they knew
• 8.010 for by now they knew Bilbo had the sharpest eyes among them.
• 8.035 Yet if they had known more about it
• 8.035 they would have known that they were at last drawing towards the eastern edge,
• 8.036 But they did not know this,
• 8.103 though I don’t suppose they knew what it was,
• 8.104 he knew,
• 8.104 and before the spider knew what was happening it felt his sting
• 8.125 They knew only too well that they would soon all have been dead,
• 8.125 Knowing the truth about the vanishing
• 8.127 Now I know!
• 8.133 All this was well known to every dwarf,
• 8.138 I don’t know,
• 9.003 and neither he nor the others knew where they had started from anyway.
• 9.009 I have a right to know
• 9.010 until one at least of them was willing to tell him all he wanted to know.
• 9.011 and indeed he did not know where
• 9.013 and after a time he got to know his way about very well.
• 9.027 and know what Bilbo was going to do,
• 9.028 goodness knows where the king will put you next,
• 9.037 as Bilbo knew,
• 9.051 He did not know the way by land
• 9.053 Back to lands you once did know!
• 9.053 Back to lands you once did know!
• 9.054 and not knowing what else to do,
• 9.062 and he knew now only too well what it was
• 10.004 if he had known that news of this had reached Gandalf far away
• 10.004 But Bilbo did not know it.
• 10.005 All he knew was that the river seemed to go on
• 10.006 Only from the map did Bilbo know that away up there,
• 10.036 Indeed such excitement had not been known
• 10.036 They did not know of course how Thorin had escaped,
• 10.040 Still, I daresay, more was guessed than was known,
• 10.040 In any case the king knew now the dwarves’ errand,
• 10.043 and there is no knowing what a dwarf will not dare
• 11.004 They knew that they were drawing near to the end of their journey,
• 11.027 I might have known that something dreadful
• 12.003 and he knew what he was driving at.
• 12.020 but they know it to an ounce as a rule,
• 12.041 but it was not so bad now he knew,
• 12.041 Had he known more about dragons
• 12.058 since you know all about Bilbo’s adventures
• 12.062 I know the smell
• 12.062 and not know it!
• 12.065 You don’t know everything,
• 12.067 I don’t know if it has occurred to you that,
• 12.067 and he knew his guesses were not far out,
• 12.076 He did not know
• 12.081 especially wanting to know
• 12.087 I am sure he knows we came
• 12.089 to know of the bare patch
• 12.091 Smaug knows now how I came down to his hall,
• 12.093 I don’t know,
• 12.093 I don’t know –
• 12.094 for no one knew whether or how they could get it open again
• 12.095 We knew it would be a desperate venture,’
• 12.095 and we know that still;
• 12.103 I don’t know your smell,
• 13.005 when I knew there was a dragon at the other end,
• 13.012 and found that he did not know
• 13.018 but they did not know the reason.
• 13.032 I don’t know.
• 13.043 Thorin knew every passage
• 13.053 And I think I know which way we should go:
• 13.059 I would give a good breakfast to know.
• 13.064 (If you want to know what cram is,
• 13.064 I can only say that I don’t know the recipe;
• 14.006 the only king under the Mountain we have ever known.’
• 14.018 though they knew his worth
• 14.040 and already knew much of what had happened.
• 15.010 I knew many among the ravens of the rocks
• 15.014 but he was well known to you once.
• 15.028 and by that time they knew
• 16.022 if you want to know.
• 16.022 I know your king well by sight,
• 16.022 though perhaps he doesn’t know me to look at.
• 16.026 Really you know,’
• 16.027 However you don’t know Thorin Oakenshield
• 16.039 don’t you know.
• 17.036 whatever they may know of battle
• 17.044 Not even the ravens knew of their coming
• 17.044 How much Gandalf knew cannot be said,
• 17.066 and knew no more.
• 18.019 in you of good than you know,
• 18.022 no one knew how or from where.
• 18.036 I don’t know.
• 18.036 And I don’t know what I should have done with it
• 18.048 don’t you know,’
• 19.005 Most of the tale he knew,
• 19.005 when a part of the story which he did not yet know came in.
• 19.028 were as well known to him as his hands
• 19.032 And trees and hills they long have known.
• 7.082 and sit down!
• 7.082 and of their scramble down the stone-slide
• 7.084 when the goblins came down from the hills
• 7.099 The wind came down from mountains cold,
• 7.106 which was peering down through the smoke-hole
• 7.108 and had rolled down with a bump from the platform on to the floor.
• 7.118 and the goblins down here?
• 7.13 their path would have led them down a stream from the mountains
• 7.13 and though here the Mountains too drew down nearer,
• 7.153 and rode down into the West.
• 8.002 stabbed down thin
• 8.004 There was no movement of air down under the forest-roof,
• 8.005 And sometimes they would gleam down
• 8.007 before they managed to bring one down
• 8.015 which is low just there where the path goes down into the water.’
• 8.021 before it floated off down the current.
• 8.028 Since it did not fall down again,
• 8.03 when the hart bore down on him,
• 8.037 A few leaves came rustling down
• 8.041 and how he was going to get down again
• 8.043 who were now simply stamping with impatience down below,
• 8.043 there was no food to go back to down below.
• 8.044 and he climbed down full of despair.
• 8.048 he sat down
• 8.05 before they lay down
• 8.05 and that he wanted to lie down
• 8.06 but to settle down for the night where they were;
• 8.068 as he lay down beside the dwarves
• 8.074 So he sat himself down with his back to a tree,
• 8.075 and then he fell down
• 8.097 Down you drop!
• 8.104 if a spider had not luckily left a rope hanging down;
• 8.112 and fell down the tree
• 8.113 Come down!
• 8.113 Come down!’
• 8.114 Down the dwarves scrambled or jumped or dropped,
• 8.12 and throwing down their long clinging threads.
• 9.002 and sat down
• 9.003 There the great beeches came right down to the bank,
• 9.018 There the rocky roof came down
• 9.02 to a place far down the river where the bank jutted out,
• 9.022 The guards were tramping away down the passages
• 9.025 and sat down at a table on which two large flagons were set.
• 9.03 far down
• 9.035 and they calmed down.
• 9.035 down into the lowest cellars they crept.
• 9.037 some elves were under orders to come down
• 9.041 I have no wish to waste time down here
• 9.044 and waiting down here,
• 9.049 roll-roll-rolling down the hole!
• 9.049 Down they go, down they bump!
• 9.049 Down they go, down they bump!
• 9.05 but down they all went,
• 9.05 and bobbing away down the current.
• 9.053 Down the swift dark stream you go
• 9.053 Down the swift dark stream you go
• 9.054 Down into the water he fell,
• 9.06 and twisted off down the stream,
• 9.061 flowing down
• 9.064 and there was a merry racket down by the river.
• 9.064 down the stream to Lake-town.
• 9.064 He scrambled down as fast as his stiff legs would take him
• 9.068 and went sailing away down,
• 9.068 down towards the Lake.
• 10.001 that came down upon their left.
• 10.006 the Running River came down
• 10.01 if they could have seen what happened down by the shore,
• 10.013 but they lay down
• 10.024 lay down your arms!’
• 10.028 going down to the surface of the lake.
• 10.038 coming down the river to Lake-town.
• 10.042 It would not do to let everything cool down with delay.
• 10.045 from the great steps of the town-hall that went down to the lake.
• 11.002 making off swiftly down the river
• 11.014 down the valley
• 11.014 Looking down they saw that they were at the top of the cliff
• 11.014 and were gazing down on to their own camp below.
• 11.015 “and then at evening began their long climb down.
[11.016]”
• 11.016 The others went down the valley
• 11.017 Down the same way they were able occasionally
• 11.026 till they hang down the cliff to the valley
• 11.028 some were exercising the ponies down below,
• 11.038 in and down.
• 12.008 he crept noiselessly down,
• 12.008 down, down into the dark.
• 12.008 down, down into the dark.
• 12.01 right ahead down there?’
• 12.011 down there
• 12.017 than when he was going down,
• 12.019 from far down
• 12.02 and cowered down in fright.
• 12.02 from far above that came down through it
• 12.024 they are down
• 12.027 at any moment he might come blazing down
• 12.031 They crept further down the tunnel,
• 12.04 and will creep down this very noon –
• 12.041 down into the Mountain.
• 12.042 soon faded as he went down.
• 12.059 I haven’t been down that way
• 12.081 right down to the skin.
• 12.091 Smaug knows now how I came down to his hall,
• 12.094 and down the tunnel.
• 12.094 not far down from the half-open door
• 12.101 They had hardly gone any distance down the tunnel
• 12.101 They fled further down the tunnel
• 12.102 down the wind
• 13.005 I am going down the tunnel once again.
• 13.005 Anyway the only way out is down.
• 13.008 Down, down they went.
• 13.008 Down, down they went.
• 13.015 when Bilbo fell forward down the step with a bump into the hall,
• 13.019 At last he looked down upon it,
• 13.022 Down the other side of the great mound he climbed,
• 13.035 Now the dwarves took down mail
• 13.039 and sat down on the floor;
• 13.043 and went down wide echoing ways,
• 13.049 and foamed down towards the valley.
• 13.055 But look down there!
• 13.059 I hope he is not up on the Mountain looking down at us!’
• 13.071 and some threw themselves down at once
• 14.002 the Running River came down from the North.
• 14.011 was thrown down
• 14.014 Then down he swooped
• 14.015 as he hurtled down
• 14.015 and smashed down.
• 14.016 Weapons were flung down.
• 14.016 and burned down to the surface of the lake.
• 14.018 down the Running River from the ruin long ago.
• 14.023 and dived down
• 14.023 and crashed down from on high
• 14.025 and down the wind came the voices
• 14.032 and down with Moneybags,’
• 14.033 What sort of gold have they sent down the river to reward us?
• 14.042 he hastened now down the river to the Long Lake.
• 14.043 sent down from the Forest.
• 15.027 far down the banks
• 15.034 and to go down
• 15.053 laying down your arms before you approach the threshold.’
• 16.016 slipped down over the wall,
• 16.017 and climbed down towards the lower course of the stream,
• 16.046 and then he sat down on the wall
• 17.016 Put him down,
• 17.02 Get down now to your friends!’
• 17.02 or I will throw you down.’
• 17.022 Get down!’
• 17.026 And so Bilbo was swung down from the wall,
• 17.032 and there they laid down their weapons
• 17.044 ready to sweep down
• 17.05 a thousand of their spearmen leapt down
• 17.052 back down the river to escape from the trap;
• 17.053 and others were streaming down recklessly,
• 17.053 by paths that ran down from the main mass
• 17.056 Rocks were hurled down from on high
• 17.056 leapt down to the falls’ foot,
• 17.058 Down, heedless of order,
• 17.058 Down too came many of the Lake-men,
• 17.059 were being slowly beaten down.
• 17.061 or driven down
• 17.064 The eagles were coming down the wind,
• 18.012 I will carry you down to the camp
• 18.013 It was not long before Bilbo was set down before a tent
• 18.021 they had come speeding down the gale
• 18.021 or driving them down shrieking
• 18.024 and pulled down Bolg himself
• 19.001 As they rode down the steep path,
• 19.001 and as soon as the riders came down
• 19.043 and down the Running River;
